PROMOTIONS AND PAY RISE FOR SOME MINISTERS, HAVE THEY DONE A GOOD JOB?

In the latest cabinet reshuffle announced by PM Lee, several promotions and new appointments are being rolled out and will come into effect from the 1st of September.
Chan Chun Sing will be promoted from acting minister to become a full minister of the ministry of social and family development.
Tan Chuan-Jin will no longer be a senior minister of state for national development but he will continue in his role as the acting minister of manpower.
Amy Khor is seeing a promotion to become a senior minister of state for health and manpower. Previously she was a minister of state for these areas.
Josephine Teo will see a similar promotion from minister to senior minister of state for finance and transport.
Sim Ann is being promoted from senior parliamentary secretary to become a minister of state in the ministries of education and communications & information.
Similarly, Maliki Osman is also becoming a minister of state, up from his previous position of senior parliamentary secretary. He will remain in the ministry of national development and the ministry of defence.
There are also two new appointments including Desmond Lee as a minister of state for national development and Ms Low Yen Ling as the parliamentary secretary for social and family development.
Ms Low will be taking her position from October while the rest of the cabinet will take on their new roles at the start of September.
While the new roles have been announced to the public, there has not yet been any mention of changes in these ministers’ pay.
Given that many have been promoted, it is most probable that these new positions will come with an increased salary as well.
What is more curious is the fact that there have been 7 promotions with only Tan Chuan-Jin giving up a position.
Effectively, 7 people have been promoted and will likely see their pay increase while there is only 1 person that might see a decrease in pay. It seems that the overall pay packet of the cabinet ministers will be increasing with this change.
Do these new roles mean that the ministers can now do their jobs better? Were they previously restricted by their job titles to serve Singaporeans?
While every job should have promotions and pay increments, these are usually connected to good work performance.
Do you think these ministers have been doing a good job or are they just riding on the fact that GDP is still growing thanks to the artificial “growth” caused by the injection of foreign labour?
