HIGH MINISTER PAY DOES NOT EQUATE TO HIGH QUALITY OF ANYTHING!

First I’d like to start by stating that our ministers are paid way too much. It is an honor and privilege to be a MP or a minister and they should not need ‘super high’ salaries to want to run for office.

However, this is not the point of the article. The focus is on how Singaporeans LOVE to use the ministers high salary as an excuse to be ‘the best in the world in everything.’

However, is this logical? I believe not and I will show you why.

The whole basis of the argument is that the higher you pay your leaders (as compared to leaders from other countries) the more you can rightfully expect from them. That means if you may your leaders shit, the country can go to shit and you’ll be perfectly fine with it. If our leaders take third world leaders pay then you will be okay with rampant rape, violence, unemployment in Singapore? You won’t complain?

Now I know you will say “we won’t allow our ministers to take third world pay.. we will make sure they get ‘first world pay’ so that we can have ‘first world’ expectations of them’”. Will you be so insistent that how much you may your Ministers defines the quality of their performance (a.k.a the state of the country)?

What about looking at it this way, if we pay the MPs of ‘shit countries’ (like African Nations, other SEA countries ect.) will they become like Singapore? Even Malaysia.. if their leaders got the exact same pay as ours, will Malaysia be as successful as Singapore? If it was so easy to bring countries out of property to a developed state, the U.N. and various super rich charities such as the Bill Gates foundation and the Red Cross would have just started paying poor countries leaders sg leaders pay to solve global poverty ect.

Whether a leader performs or not, whether a country can do something or not does not depend on how much you pay the leaders.. what matters is the leaders themselves.. their character and their abilities.. the people of the country.. the ability of their society/ civilization. Therefore, when something is not up to your expectations in Singapore, it is not (logically) tied to the pay of your leaders.. think harder.. think about why and how we can do better.. why we deserve to expect more.

Singaporean Exceptionalism perhaps?

Editor's Note:

Singapore is doing well and is even world ranking in many ways. However, it is definitely not the world's best in everything. Despite this, Singapore's Ministers are the best paid in all the world.

Of course, ministers shouldn't be underpaid and in fact, they should be paid well, but there is no reason why they should have a salary that is several times greater than that of other world leaders.

Are our ministers several times better than those of America or Hong Kong?
